Sensa and Kinectrics Inc. introduce advanced solutions for power cable applications

 

Sensa is pleased to announce that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Kinectrics Inc. to deliver to market Dynamic Rating System (DRS) solutions

 

Dynamic Rating System technology will enhance Sensa’s current capabilities in the power market place by combining Dynamic Feeder Rating (DFR) software developed by Kinectrics with Sensa’s fiber optic temperature sensing solutions.

 

 

The new Dynamic Rating System combines Sensa and Kinectrics’ individual technologies to present a significant advantage in high voltage cable management.

 

• Sensa’s Fiber optic monitoring solutions utilize Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) technology developed by Sensa in the early 1980s to provide power circuit monitoring, including buried and submarine cable temperature monitoring.  Sensa’s DTS systems provide early warning of potential problems by identifying the location and temperature of any “hot spots” on the cables.  This provides a proactive management approach  to asset condition monitoring that can extend cable life by reducing the risk of overheating, thus leading to improvement in overall network reliability

 

• The Dynamic Feeder Rating (DFR) systems component is an important alternative to conventional methods for determining cable ampacities.  The DFR will compute real-time conductor operating temperatures and corresponding real-time steady-state and emergency ratings based on actual cable conditions (measured as cable jacket and soil temperatures and cable current). DFR systems can be used to enhance the current-carrying capacity of power cables and to eliminate the risk of overheating. They allow utilization of cable systems to their maximum capabilities and are particularly useful when a deferment of costly capital programs is desirable.

 

 

Dynamic Rating technology provides utilities with practical ratings and advance knowledge of critical conditions in advance of when those conditions would be reached.  The mutual goal of Sensa and Kinectrics is to help clients achieve optimal, cost-effective cable performance.

 

The Dynamic Rating System can be applied to any type of cable installation and the output can be customized to meet specific user requirements.
