Submarine Power Cables

Sensa’s temperature monitoring systems are also used to monitor both a.c and d.c submarine power cables. Sensa’s long range fiber optic temperature monitoring systems are available with a range up to 30km (18.75 miles) and this can be useful for the long cable lengths used in some projects.

In projects where the cables are longer than the range of monitoring system currently available it is sometimes acceptable to monitor from either end. In some cases it is of more interest to monitor the local ends particularly the shore sections where the cables are more exposed in shallow or tidal waters and where the cables traverse the beach and land sections.

Sensa has supplied submarine cable temperature monitoring solutions for prestigious off-shore wind park installations in the North Sea. In these installations the temperatures of the cables exiting the seabed and routed through the J tubes up to the platform are of particular interest.

The fiber optic monitoring system can also provide vital information , by monitoring changes in temperature, to detect sheath damage due to fishing nets, lines, anchors etc.
